I so didn't read any of the responses beyond Kari's first one...(it's 11:40pm and I've been drinking ;) )

I'm shooting Nikon with a 18-55 kit lens for slow crawling/trails, and a Sigma 70-200 2.8 for Motocross and desert. IMO, thats all you need for what we do

All I've figured out so far is that I need more zoom than 55mm. I'm going to pick up either the Sigma 18-200 or Tamarons 18-270mm. Both seem to sell around the same price from a reasonable seller so I'm just gonna have to find the right deal.

Both good options.  The more I shoot portraits with my 2.8 though, the more I want to shoot everything with my 2.8 lol

Yeah, I would love the 2.8. With the zoom that I need, it's outta my range though. I need one that I can still afford to take on the trail.

I wish the lens manufacturers would show you the "aperture curve." I want to know what the max is at different focal lengths. No just max and min. :realmad:

Has anyone ever used an extender before?  Here's what I'm thinking....Canon 70-200 f2.8 L IS USM with a Canon EF 1.4x II or III Extender.

Technically it would give me about 280 out of the 200 lens if I needed it.  I've read up on the loss of one click but that still doesn't seem bad...it would make it a 98-280mm f/4.  I've also read that there are not as many focal point options when using it...making the center point your main one.  Also....tending to have some very slight fisheye tendencies when maximizing zoom.

Any thoughts?

Out of curiousity, do you set your aperture manually?

I wasn't impressed with that lens when it was zoomed further out. I set my shutter speeds and let the camera set the aperture and it didn't take much to get it into the mid 5's.

I loved the lens closer up though.
