I'm kinda new to the AR game and picking up my first one later this week, it's a 5.56 carbine model, flat top receiver.

For those of you who own one, in your opinion what is the best optic for close to medium range varmint/predator hunting on a budget? And which brand/ model?
I've been doing a lot of research online but want to hear what works best here local

I have the Trijicon accupoint 1-4x24 TR24. It's perfect for the 100-150 yard range, but can reach out farther if needed, plus it can be taken down to a zero zoom unlike some others. The price is hefty, but it is one of the nicest sight I have ever used.

It doesn't have open sights. It's a flat top receiver ready for optics, I'm thinking red dot or holographic sight just can't decide which model to go with there's so many choices out there.

Edit: Craig I'm diggin that trijicon but way out of my price range so don't leave it laying around

I went for the Vortex Strikefire on my AR-Platform.  It has red dot and green dot as well as lets you use your flip up sights  as a back up.  I was looking at the the aimpoints and Eotech but just didn't have the cash after purchasing the gun an stocking up on ammo.  With that said I'm extremely happy with the Vortex.  Shoots pretty good groups at 100-150 yards with a 2 M.O.A. dot at 50 yards and didn't break the bank.  Only down falls I have found so far is the batteries are a PITA to get ahold of and the power button can get pushed on in the gun case without much effort due to its placement.  (although it has an automatic shutoff)

I have one at the house I picked up at sure shot in kitittas that you can try when you get it while you are deciding. It has a red and green illuminated cross reticle and is a decent zoom as well IIRC.

I have a vortex scope on my 223 (not ar) and am happy with it. The boss has an eotec on his ar but no zoom so it kinda sucks past like 50 yards or so.
